THE REGION

Beyond the Camargue, with its own distinctive character, our region boasts a wide range of heritage sites, cultural centres and exceptional natural landscapes.

Did you know that in the Gard or rather from deep within it, springs the renownedPerrier Water ? This region, once under Roman occupation, proudly bears numerous traces of that period.
For a start, there’s Nîmes where you can visit not just the magnificent amphitheatre , but also see the River Gardon, spanned by the magnificent aqueduct commonly known as the Pont du Gard
Visit the abbey church of St Gilles erected on the Pilgrimage Route to Santiago de Compostela, or Uzès France’s first duchy with its quaint town centre, still with a hint of the scents of liquorice, to remind you of your childhood when you visit the Haribo sweet factory. Travel back to the 14th-century heyday of the Papacy with a visit to Villeneuve lez Avignon.
A little higher up, you can see the Cévennes, scene of the Camisard resistance Musée du Désert. Let your imagination take you to Asia as you wander through la Bambouseraie in Anduze and make your way to the very highest point of the Gard to visit the meteorological station at Mont Aigoual

Montpellier, the regional capital, where historical and modern buildings blend in perfect harmony.

In Herault’s hinterland, you can leave the heat of the sun and explore the cool grottoes or the narrow, shady streets of St Guilhem le Désert Poetry-lovers will want to stop off at Sète, the fascinating island, birthplace of Paul Valéry and Georges Brassens.
